An international symposium on "Medical and Surgical Problems of the Esophagus" was held in Rome, May 7-9, 1980, at the Cavalieri Hilton Hotel under the presidency of Prof Sergio Stipa of Rome and world traveler, Mr Ronald H. R. Belsey. The meeting was sponsored by a number of Italian organizations and was designed to provide a podium for physicians and surgeons from all parts of the world interested in esophageal problems to discuss problems of mutual interest. In this effort, the meeting succeeded extraordinarily well.

In contrast to other Italian meetings that I have attended, this one was well organized and skillfully conducted. The moderators did their best to keep the speakers within their time limits and, in general, the meetings went off much as they were planned. To be sure, the sessions were unusually long, running from 9 am to 8:30 pm or later each day. This was the result
