The fear that an atlas will be used by the occasional surgeon is well founded and addressed by the authors in the preface with a pointed quote from Dr Paul Tessier, "that craniofacial surgery should be performed only if it is the main interest of that surgeon and he has the support facilities of a major pediatric hospital to provide safety and care in planning." I completely agree with this statement, and if one keeps it firmly in mind, this atlas should be a positive influence to achieve greater finesse and safety in the performance of these procedures. If, on the other hand, this atlas is used as a shortcut to learning this complicated field of surgery then it will prove to be a hazardous addition to the field of medical literature.

Although this is a multiauthored book, the chapters are fairly uniform in style and quality. One major disappointment
