Many surgeons trained in the 1950s and early 1960s will fondly recall the Handbooks of Operative Surgery. Year Book Medical Publishers Inc is issuing the Atlas of Operative Surgery series as an updated version of the old handbooks.

The book is in atlas size rather than handbook size. Many of the old standard operations, eg, carotid endarterectomy and aortofemoral bypass, are dealt with well. But the strength of the book is in its inclusion of a large number of operations that are rarely done. Few references discuss the various visceral revascularization procedures or the extraanatomic bypasses, and I know of no other single reference that presents the technique of all of these.

The operations are presented as one to three pages of pictures with notes rather than a detailed operative description. The pictures carry the message. The notes are there primarily to discuss technical points that are not absolutely clear
