Abstract

The fourth edition of Shackelford's Surgery of the Alimentary Tract documents the demiurgic genius and organizational ability of the editor, George D. Zuidema, MD. This classic edition appears in 5 volumes, assembled with the cooperation of 5 coeditors who possess extraordinary credentials: Mark Orringer, MD (volume 1), Wallace Ritchie, Jr, MD (volume 2), Jeremiah Turcotte, MD (volume 3), Robert E. Condon, MD (volume 4), and Lloyd Nyhus, MD (volume 5). These volumes include 170 contributors covering 2775 pages. The illustrations, legends, descriptions, and references are of high quality. The format is thorough and the informational base current. The editor has assembled a superior group of international contributors. The fourth edition of Shackelford's Surgery of the Alimentary Tract is well indexed and remains an excellent reference source. It should grace every surgeon's library.
