Pulmonary ContusionClinical Experience

Abstract

Sixty-two cases of pulmonary contusion (PC) were treated in 3½ years. Of the last 37 patients, routinely treated with positive pressure ventilation (PPV), seven died, whereas of the first 25, in whom PPV was not routinely used from the outset, 12 died. The two groups were comparable in age, degree of trauma, and injuries to other body areas. The treatment is strongly recommended as a routine, particularly since the symptoms are insidious and the method is far less effective if delayed until symptoms become obvious.
