The work of Krogh 1 on the anatomy and physiology of the capillaries furnished a new method of approach for the study of the vascular system. His work is so well known that it is unnecessary to dwell on it further than to state that he observed the circulation in superficial vessels through a binocular microscope. Microscopic study of the capillaries in most tissues, however, offers many difficulties, one of which is the lack of contrast, the vessels being of a color similar to that of their surroundings. It occurred to us that the brain would be the best place to study the capillaries, as here the contrast would be greatest and the observations more accurate and reliable.
Our work is being carried out along the following lines: (1) determination, by direct microscopic observation, whether the cerebral vessels are affected by stimuli which cause vasomotor effects in vessels of other
