Stroke After Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery

JAMA. 2011;305(21):2171-2172. doi:10.1001/jama.2011.707

To the Editor: In their study, Dr Tarakji and colleagues assessed the timing of and risk factors for stroke in adults after coronary artery bypass graft surgery.1 Analyses were performed separately according to different surgical periods (intraoperative vs postoperative), and they adjusted for covariates. However, they did not report the etiology of perioperative stroke (embolic, hypoperfusion, thrombotic, or hemorrhagic), as mentioned in their limitations. This is a problem, because different types of stroke are associated with different risk factors.
