In Reply: Drs Bangsberg and Goldschmidt make
an excellent point: experience with antiretroviral therapy and with the management
of PEP for occupational exposures to HIV are valuable assets in the management
of occupational HIV exposures in the health care workplace. The PEP "hotline"
concept was pioneered by Julie Gerberding, MD, at San Francisco General Hospital
in the early 1990s1 and has proven to be
remarkably useful to health care workers who have sustained occupational exposures
and the practitioners managing these exposures.
