To the Editor: The article on perceived health risks among cigarette smokers1 once again demonstrates what is already common knowledge to most physicians, that most smokers do not perceive that their risks of cancer or heart disease are increased because of smoking. However, the conclusions of the article, namely that these perceptions are due either to denial of the facts or ignorance of them, miss the real reason.
