To the Editor: The article on perceived health
risks among cigarette smokers1 once again
demonstrates what is already common knowledge to most physicians, that most
smokers do not perceive that their risks of cancer or heart disease are increased
because of smoking. However, the conclusions of the article, namely that these
perceptions are due either to denial of the facts or ignorance of them, miss
the real reason.
