To the Editor: Dr Johnson and colleagues1 investigated a potential causal relationship between cigarette smoking and anxiety. Previous work has identified an association between these common phenomena but failed to determine its direction. Understanding this causal relationship is important for public health in terms of better prevention and control of smoking and anxiety.
