To the Editor: Dr Charon's1 description of narrative medicine sounds like the experience that was built into the practice of those of us who had the privilege of solo practice in small towns where we came to know multiple members of successive generations of the same families. It is missing from the experience of too many specialists who treat diseases and not patients.
