During the past century, the United States shifted from a majority of residents living in rural settings to an urban-based society; however, 20% of the population or approximately 60 million individuals still live in rural communities. Residents in these communities are more likely to be older, uninsured, live in poverty, and report poorer health status than their nonrural counterparts.1-3
