Washington—In this issue of JAMA, the
Medical News & Perspectives section begins publication of a page that
will feature reports of happenings on Capitol Hill that are of interest to
medical professionals. As Congress convened its fall 2002 session, the fate
of several health care bills remained uncertain. The following is an update:
Some 2 million physicians, hospitals, and other health care providers
have until October 15 to request an extension for coming into compliance with
electronic patient data standards provided under the Health Insurance Portability
and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which became law in 1996.
