JAMA. 1998;280(1):89. doi:10.1001/jama.280.1.89

Combinations of antiretroviral medications and improved prophylaxis against common infectious pathogens have improved and prolonged life for people with HIV infection. The clinical investigations represent a triumph of discovery, application, and advocacy. Partnerships between and among government agencies, pharmaceutical companies, academic centers, primary care physicians, and patient advocates contributed to the development and implementation of the scientific breakthroughs, translating them into the multiple effective treatments for HIV-infected people.
