More than 2 billion people gained access to improved drinking water sources between 1990 and 2010, according to the World Health Organization and UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply and Sanitation (http: //tinyurl.com/7vmtqla). This achievement, one of the first Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to be attained, meets the international target to reduce by half the number of people who do not have access to safe drinking water and does so 5 years before the 2015 MDG deadline.
