A gentle smile shone from within as I read the Hallmark thank-you card that was left on my desk by a patient. This beautiful note proclaimed the depth of gratitude to me and our medical team for our “compassionate and excellent medical care” given on her journey from diagnosis to remission of metastatic ovarian cancer. I’m always moved that a patient would make the effort to thank us for the privilege of caring for her.
“Keep that,” Sandi said with the quiet wisdom of a seasoned oncology nurse. “You’ll need it someday.” She had given me that advice before. And, as instructed, I placed the card in a pile with the others at the corner of my desk.
