In Reply.—Unfortunately, the efforts
of organized medicine, such as those mentioned by Dr Detesco, have not stopped
or perceptibly slowed the degradation of care and caring. Only the widest
possible mobilization of health professionals and patients can reclaim the
soul of medicine. The state medical association in New Mexico, several local
medical societies, 12 state nursing associations, 3 national unions, and many
consumer groups already have endorsed our call to action. We hope and trust
that many other elements of organized medicine will collaborate in this effort.
