In Reply.—From a diagnostic testing standpoint, the use of chest percussion together with auscultation in a parallel testing approach may increase the sensitivity of the clinical examination in detecting pneumonia. In addition, percussion may be of social and cultural value. Unfortunately, we were unable to identify any studies that assessed the accuracy of this component of the examination either alone or in combination with other findings. Clinicians typically use a combination of clinical findings in assessing the presence and severity of illness, yet there are no studies to date that provide guidance about how to use combinations of clinical examination findings effectively.
