Abstract

Since its establishment in this century, the Council on Medical Education has been charged to make a yearly report to the profession on the existing conditions of medical education. This 64th Annual Report on Medical Education in the United States has been prepared by the Council staff in response to its long-existing charge. The report is based on information provided by individual medical schools, hospitals, governmental agencies, the Association of American Medical Colleges, and others; to all of these, the Council on Medical Education is grateful.

There are several sections of the report. The first presents information concerning medical schools, their faculties, programs and students. Most of the statistical data appear in the text in graphic and summary form, and the basic tabular material is included in Appendix Tables (pp 60 to 75) for reference purposes.

The second section presents information pertinent to all Council-approved internship and residency programs. Other
