When US Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Rajiv Shah, MD, celebrates his daughter's fifth birthday next year, he plans to give her a backpack. It's a simple gift for a milestone birthday, marking the impending start of her school career. It's also a symbolic one for Shah, who recently announced the launch of a campaign, “Every Child Deserves a 5th Birthday,” to help more children around the world live long enough to reach that milestone.
