Dr. Peter Poulos, an engineerphysician, has been appointed to the open heart surgery group at Pollak Hospital in Jersey City. Paul J. Hanly, superintendent of the hospital, said Poulos will assist the surgery team with emphasis on the heart-lung machine.

Poulos will complement the work of Dr. Joseph Timmes, named last month to direct open-heart surgery, Hanly said. Poulos received a B.S. degree in aeronautical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and later received his M.D. from Cornell University. He is currently assistant professor of surgery at Seton Hall College of Medicine, attending cardiac surgeon at Presbyterian Hospital in Newark, and consulting thoracic surgeon at the Black-Stevenson Cancer Clinic, also in Newark.

Dr. Paul Talalay has been appointed the first John Jacob Abel professor of pharmacology and experimental therapeutics and director of that department at Johns Hopkins University.
