In a snapshot for members of Congress submitted October 1, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) reported that rates of ground ambulance transport for all Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries increased 33% from 2004 to 2010. In 2010, ambulance operators furnished almost 16.6 million ground ambulance transports for about 5.1 million Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries. The cost to Medicare for such transport was about $5.2 billion (http://tinyurl.com/9mjundy).
