A combination of 6 naturally occurring bacteria can eradicate a highly contagious form of Clostridium difficile in mice (Lawley TD et al. PLoS Pathog. 2012;8:e1002995). The mix included 3 previously described species (Staphylococcus warneri, Enterococcus hirae, and Lactobacillus reuteri) and 3 novel species.
Mice in the study were infected with a persistent form of C difficile that consistently relapsed to a high level of shedding or contagiousness after the animals were treated with a range of antibiotics.
