More than 25 million US adults have type 2 diabetes, and this number will likely double by 2050 given expected changes in demographics and continued progression of the obesity epidemic.1,2 Identifying cost-effective strategies to manage diabetes is essential because diabetes is responsible for more than $116 billion in direct medical care costs, or 5% of all US health care spending.1
