Omega-3 Fatty Acid Supplementation and Cardiovascular Disease Events

JAMA. 2013;309(1):27. doi:10.1001/jama.2012.116651

To the Editor: Omega-3 PUFA supplementation was not associated with a lower risk of any cardiovascular outcome in a study by Dr Rizos and colleagues.1 These results should be interpreted with caution due to the methodological shortcomings of the study and issues of interpretation.

First, the correction for multiple comparisons applied by the authors is not suggested by Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and has rarely been used in other meta-analyses. Thus, the authors introduced an unnecessarily stringent level of significance (P < .0063 instead of P < .05), hampering interpretation of the results.
