To the Editor: The Age of Red Blood Cells in Premature Infants (ARIPI) study by Dr Fergusson and colleagues1 found no difference in the primary outcome between infants receiving red blood cells (RBCs) stored for less than 7 days (mean, 5.1 days) and those receiving older RBCs (mean, 14.6 days) in the standard of care group. This finding suggests that the age of RBCs in the population of infants studied does not affect common morbidities of prematurity, including necrotizing enterocolitis.
