Combating Medicare Fraud

JAMA. 2013;309(22):2317. doi:10.1001/jama.2013.6815

Some 146 stakeholders in the health care community are recommending ways to improve federal efforts to combat waste, fraud, and abuse in the Medicare and Medicaid programs. The recommendations are detailed in a report released on April 24 by bipartisan leadership of the Senate Committee on Finance (http://tinyurl.com/avjagpx).

The 5 primary areas of recommendations contained in the report concerned improper payments, audit burden, enforcement, data management, and beneficiary protection. To determine whether legislative action will be pursued, these policy recommendations will be further examined by members of the Finance Committee, which has jurisdiction over the Medicare and Medicaid programs.
