A delay by the Department of Transportation to require vehicle manufacturers to install backup cameras, intended to reduce deaths caused by rearview mirror blind spots, disappointed Sen John D. (Jay) Rockefeller IV (D, WVa), chairman of the Senate’s Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. The requirement, which was supposed to be implemented by February 2011, is being postponed another 2 years, departing Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a June 20 letter to Congress.
