Updated guidelines for blood pressure and cholesterol control, already long overdue, will be delayed even further.
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) has published guidelines since the 1970s and historically has produced updates every few years. The current versions, however, are roughly a decade old. The Seventh Report of the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure (JNC 7) was published in 2003, and the Third Report of the Expert Panel on Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Cholesterol in Adults (ATP III) appeared in 2002, with an update in 2004. Expert panels at the NHLBI had also been working on creating guidelines for obesity, lifestyle, and risk assessment.
