A Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak that sickened 91 people in Alberta, Canada, has been traced to a Calgary catering company that mixed eggs in a dirty bucket before making them into breakfast sandwiches that were sold from lunch trucks.
Outbreak cases occurred between October 2010 and February 2011. The common link among those who became sick was eating food from lunch trucks parked at various Alberta workplaces. Most of the patients were Calgary residents; 76% were men and 7% were hospitalized. Patients had eaten more than 40 different items from the lunch trucks, but those most frequently reported were breakfast egg sandwiches and pork dumplings.
