Supplement Recalled Over Liver Risk

JAMA. 2013;310(24):2606. doi:10.1001/jama.2013.284383

A supplement for bodybuilding and weight loss was recalled in November at the request of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after reports linked it to acute hepatitis and liver failure (http://1.usa.gov/1bjGOmS).

In late September, state health officials in Hawaii notified the public of a cluster of cases of acute hepatitis or liver failure among individuals who had used weight loss or bodybuilding supplements. The FDA reviewed medical records from 46 patients submitted by Hawaiian officials and confirmed that 27 of the individuals had taken OxyElite Pro.
