Brief Buprenorphine Detox Effective for Some Opioid-Dependent Patients

JAMA. 2013;310(24):2605. doi:10.1001/jama.2013.284784

Although the usual first-line treatment for patients dependent on prescription opioids is extended agonist maintenance, detoxification may be preferable for some patients or may be the only treatment option available. To evaluate an outpatient detoxification regimen, researchers randomized 70 opioid-dependent patients to 1-, 2-, or 4-week buprenorphine tapering regimens after a brief stabilization with buprenorphine and naloxone (Sigmon SC et al. JAMA Psychiatry. doi:10.1001/jamapsychiatry.2013.2216 [published online October 23, 2013]). Patients received behavioral therapy during the 12-week study and naltrexone maintenance therapy after the tapering period to prevent relapse.
