The active career of the Philadelphia-born painter Cecilia Beaux (1855-1942) extended over more than 50 years (JAMAcover, December 5, 2007). Primarily a figure painter, she was equally at home in her Philadelphia studio painting her niece or in the White House painting a double portrait of Mrs Theodore Roosevelt and her daughter Ethel. She could paint the winsome 2-year-old Ernesta from a child’s-eye perspective with a brush as fine as a single feather from an angel's wing and a touch as delicate as an angel's breath. Within months she could turn with equal facility to the hoary, commanding figure of the 58-year-old John Shaw Billings and portray him as the imposing red-robed Civil War military surgeon and bibliographic scholar that he was.
