The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has appointed Frank M. Torti, MD, MPH, to be the agency's first chief scientist.
Congress created the position in 2007 to help shore up the FDA's scientific integrity, which has been called into question by agency panels and outsiders who cite inadequate resources and undue industry influence at the agency. Torti will help launch an FDA fellowship program and his office will be charged with ensuring the quality of the agency's scientific activities.
