Color and form were to American modernist painter Maurice Prendergast (1858-1924) what movement is to a dancer and rhythm to a musician. They were what he breathed and what he lived. Moreover, color was not just color nor form only form. They were living expressions of joy in the beauty he found wherever he looked, poems to the universe. On sunny days the colors sparkled and danced; when the fog rolled in, they waited softly beneath their veil. Such is Bathing, Marblehead (cover ).
