Genome Chief Steps Down

JAMA. 2008;300(4):386. doi:10.1001/jama.2008.91

Francis S. Collins, MD, PhD, is leaving his post as director of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) on August 1.

Collins, a physician and geneticist, became the agency's director in April 1993. He led the Human Genome Project, which was completed in 2003, and several other large-scale genomic research programs, including the International HapMap Project. He has also advocated for legislation protecting individuals from discrimination based on their genetic information, including the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008, which was signed into law in May.
