Francis S. Collins, MD, PhD, is leaving his post as director of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) on August 1.
Collins, a physician and geneticist, became the agency's director in April 1993. He led the Human Genome Project, which was completed in 2003, and several other large-scale genomic research programs, including the International HapMap Project.
