The Army and I parted ways this summer. Fifteen years ago the Army had been kind enough to pay for my medical school education. In return, I had the privilege of taking care of men and women who wore or had worn the uniform, as well as their family members. Depending on the day, either the Army or I got the better deal. I would like to think that although there was a contractual obligation and a financial pragmatism behind our agreement, we both benefited from the arrangement. Like all long-term relationships that come to an end, there are bittersweet memories jumbled together. They are difficult to sort out.
