The Department of Defense (DOD) is doing a poor job ensuring the quality of its program to assess the health of military service members returning from combat tours in Afghanistan and Iraq, said the Government Accountability Office (GAO) in a September 4 report.
In 2005, the DOD developed requirements and policies for its postdeployment reassessment program, which is designed to identify and address service members' health concerns, including mental health issues, 90 to 180 days after they return from deployment.
