Officials Recommend Expanded Testing for Chronic Hepatitis B Virus Infection

JAMA. 2008;300(18):2108. doi:10.1001/jama.2008.573

The introduction of several effective antiviral drugs in recent years has greatly expanded treatment options for hepatitis B. Yet many of the estimated 1.4 million US residents with the disease remain untreated because they are unaware of their infection. To address this discrepancy, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has published new recommendations urging physicians to increase routine testing for chronic hepatitis B infections (http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/rr5708a1.htm).
