It is with the pleasure of meeting an old friend that this reviewer greeted the new edition of Krugman's Infectious Diseases of Children. Our relationship has been sustained for over 25 years! It has withstood the vicissitudes of changing authors and editors; the emergence of new infectious diseases (eg, human immunodeficiency virus, human herpesvirus 6, 7, and 8) and the elimination of older scourges (eg, smallpox); and the introduction of new technologies (polymerase chain reaction) and newer prophylactic and therapeutic agents.
