This interactive CD-ROM−based application has four sections. Module 1 is a simulated dissection of the temporal bone from the middle cranial fossa and transmastoid routes. Various instruments are available to the surgeon, including a scalpel, power drill with bur or diamond stone, and nerve stimulator. The "surgeon" uses the mouse pointer to select and apply the desired instrument to the chosen area. The program, after making drilling noises, reveals the result of the dissection, and it keeps score of the surgeon's performance. The name of each anatomical structure is revealed if the operator clicks a mouse pointer on it. A summary of the surgeon's performance is available at the end of each session. The program does not really test the skill of the operator, only his or her knowledge of which instrument to apply to which general area in which sequence.
