Most US adults haven’t discussed their drinking habits with a health professional, despite evidence that shows appropriate screening and counseling can effectively reduce alcohol consumption.

Federal health officials reported in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report that only 1 in 6 US adults, 1 in 5 current drinkers, and 1 in 4 binge drinkers have ever discussed alcohol use with a physician or other health professional. The data, collected in 2011 as part of the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, covered 44 states and the District of Columbia. The figures have remained static for the past 15 years.
