US Youth Should Get Moving

Too few US adolescents get the recommended amount of daily physical activity, according to a recent report from the National Center for Health Statistics.

In 2012, about one-fourth of youths aged 12 to 15 years got at least 60 minutes a day of moderate-to-vigorous exercise, as recommended in the federal government’s 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. About 27% of boys followed the guidelines compared with 22.5% of girls.

Outside of physical education and gym classes at school, basketball was the most common form of exercise in which active boys participated, followed by running, football, and bicycling. Among active girls, running was the most common physical activity, followed by walking, basketball, and dancing.
