This retitled second edition of The Physiologic Basis of Modern Surgical Care (1988) is clearly one of the most ambitious and successful publication efforts in surgery in many years. The editor, who agonized over a proper title, need only have added "Encyclopedia of . . . " to accurately reflect the character of this incredible volume.

A remarkable quality of Modern Surgical Care is its universal applicability for the attending physician, surgical resident, and medical student. It is an impeccable source for preparing a lecture, studying for in-service or board examinations, or reviewing for patient care. The text is a classic demonstration of the current emphasis on applying the basic sciences to surgical training. This reviewer is not aware of any other publication in which so exhaustive a review of physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, and other basics is so superbly combined with discussions of the clinical diagnosis and management of surgical disorders. Further, the book's 130 contributors, among them the most notable surgeons in the United States, support their data with a bibliography of over 7000 references, many as recent as 2 years prior to the publication date of the volume. Early pertinent literature, however, is not ignored, and every chapter is appropriately and lavishly illustrated.
