The words and actions of our parents can have a powerful and long-lasting influence on us. Sometimes we are conscious of those influences, sometimes we are not. For example, occasionally I hear strange expressions come out of my mouth or watch as I perform some quirky behavior, but then realize that I am doing so because of the early influence of my parents. (How many of us have said, “I’m turning into my father”?) I refer to this phenomenon as my father's voice (although sometimes it also sounds like my mother).
