In this excellent, two-volume textbook, three of America's finest anesthesiologists have carefully assembled and edited the work of 141 contributors. The appearance of a textbook of more than 2500 pages immediately invites comparison with the other standard American texts in anesthesiology, one edited by Dr Ronald Miller and his colleagues, the other by Dr Paul Barash and his colleagues. While all the texts are excellent in their accuracy, relative completeness, and recent publication (1998, 1993, and 1996, respectively), certain differences in Longnecker's deserve comment.
