The purpose of this book is to address the one-on-one relationship of health care providers and patients in the context of contemporary health care practice in the United States. This examination is timely and needed, given the rapid changes in delivery of health care and our increasingly complex society. Changing as rapidly are roles, expectations, and equilibrium between provider and patient (or client), businessperson and consumer, employer and employee, and organization and individual, and among family members.
