In Reply: We agree with Drs Angood and Burstin that our study results should in no way be used to impugn the value of the NQF safe practices. We have no doubt that inpatient outcomes would improve if all hospitals were to consistently implement theses safe practices. We believe that both the NQF and the Leapfrog Group are quite right to focus on developing tools that can enable and encourage hospitals to provide safer care. However, any hospital survey tool that is used to assess compliance with safe practice should undergo rigorous validation to show that scores on the survey correlate with important outcomes.
