The editors achieve their stated goal of "providing, in a single source, a comprehensive yet readable account of the issues facing the United States in health care policy and management." Each of 20 chapters synthesizes current research-based knowledge about access to health care, its costs and quality, the problems of special populations (the elderly, children and families, persons with mental illness, and those with AIDS/HIV), and what the editors call "directions for reform." The editors and authors hold appointments at the University of California at Los Angeles.
