Health Agencies Update
November 25, 2009

JAMA. 2009;302(20):2194. doi:10.1001/jama.2009.1703

A program that has demonstrated that nurse-administered checklists can substantially reduce hospital-acquired infections in the intensive care unit will be expanded to more hospitals nationwide, funded by a new $8 million grant from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) estimates that 1.7 million such infections occur annually, resulting in 99 000 deaths; costs related to such infections range from $28 billion to $33 billion.
